Checklist and Skills-Based Rubrics for the 3 Types of Free Response Prompts

The checklist rubrics are designed for student group assessments.  The skills-based rubrics  allow students to easily keep track of their strengths and weaknesses.  In determining a final score, teachers should not average the scores on the skills-based rubrics because not all of the categories are weighted equally.  Students should record the scores of multiple responses from the skills-based rubrics on the appropriate progress logs.  To access the rubrics and logs, click on the links below. 

How to use the rubrics and progress logs:

Teachers may pass out the progress log after assessing and returning a response.  Students fill in their scores (the categories on the left side of the rubric match the categories across the top of the log).  After recording scores from a few responses, they can identify their weaknesses and focus accordingly.  Teachers can also determine if they need to adjust their instruction when they notice some universal weaknesses. By the way, teachers should not let students keep the logs because teenagers tend to lose things.   Teachers should pass them out only when returning papers and collect them after the students log and note any trends evident in their scores.
